Veteran's Day 2014 - Featured Viatorian

| Rev. William J. Stephenson, CSV |
William J. Stephenson (1875-1932) was born in London and came to this country at an early age. Before becoming a Viatorian priest, Stephenson served in the trenches for his adopted country.
He served in the U.S. Army artillery between 1893 and 1896. At the start of the Spanish-American War in 1898, he re-enlisted in the artillery division and served another six months.
Stephenson studied at St. Viator College in Bourbonnais, joined
the Viatorian order and was ordained in 1915. He remained at the college for a
few years teaching English and history.
When the United States entered World War I, Fr. Stephenson
volunteered in August, 1917 as a chaplain for the Knights of Columbus. He was
stationed first at Camp Custer in Battle Creek, MI, a military training
facility.
In October, 1917, Fr. Stephenson was assigned to Camp Green
in Charlotte, NC, and in March, 1918, to Camp Wadsworth in Spartanburg, SC. After a short stay there, he was assigned
overseas and served in France until the end of the war.
Fr. Stephenson was discharged from the Army in September,
1919 and returned to his duties at St. Viator College.
Later in his religious life from 1927-1929, Fr. Stephenson became
the chaplain at Hines Veteran’s Hospital in Maywood, IL, a very large
institution with hundreds of disabled war veterans.
As a veteran who served veterans, Fr. William Stephenson embodied
patriotism in the name of the Lord, Our God.

It was formally dedicated on Oct. 12, 1924 after a Mass said by the Right Rev. Msgr. Gerasime M. Legris, DD - graduate of St. Viator College, Class of 1874. The Rev. John P. O' Mahoney, CSV, treasurer of St. Viator College, delivered the sermon.
Rev. John W. R. Maguire, CSV, '11, chaplain of the council, gave an address on the accomplishments of the Knights of Columbus in Kankakee and the Rev. William J. Bergin, CSV, addressed the untiring labor of its members.
Fr. Donald W. Huntimer, CSV
On Sat. Sept. 27 at 10:30 AM, there was a memorial Mass for Fr. Don Huntimer, CSV, at the Viatorian Province Center chapel in Arlington Heights, IL. These two photo boards were displayed at the memorial service. Read Fr. Huntimer's obituary of here.

Due to limited resources, mailings and publications of the U.S. Viatorian Philangeli were curtailed in 1999, yet a special devotion to the angels remains within the Viatorian Community.
Woven Together: Celebrating 15 years of Association 1999-2014
Associates are lay men and women who have committed themselves to the Community and share the Viatorian charism along with the vowed brothers and priests. Association was originally the vision of the Community's founder, Fr. Louis Querbes (1793-1859).
The idea for the theme was inspired from a song of the same name which was originally titled Beech Spring or Sacred Harp. Here are the lyrics of verse 5 that mean so much to me:
"Let us join as one, together, now in thankfulness and praise,
as we count the many blessings woven into all our days.
We are willing, we are able, we are hopeful, we are strong.
May we know the ground we're standing on is the ground where we belong."
Also, a photo slideshow celebrating Association is being shown in the foyer near the exhibit. The photos, taken over the past 15 years of associates' activities and events, are highlighted with the music 'Woven Together' played by Br. Jim Lewnard, CSV, on the flute.

2014 Provincial Assembly Exhibits
The 2014 Provincial Assembly was held in Las Vegas at Alexis Park Resort. As usual, photo exhibits of the Viatorians celebrating their jubilees and in remembrance of those who died in the past year were on display.

Celebrating the Foundation of Belize (1998-2014)
The latest display at the Province Center in Arlington Heights is dedicated to the years that the Viatorians spent in Belize. The large graphic letters spell out BELIZE and are filled with photos from the beginning in 1998 to the transfer to the Franciscans of Mexico in 2014.
Many ministries are represented, including the bikes to Belize program, medical missions and the Belize Immersion program - to name a few. Also, all the Viatorian priests and brothers, who served there over the years, are represented.
The Viatorian associates, members since 2006, are also included in the display and remain in Belize today to continue their ministries in the name of Fr. Querbes and St. Viator.
The exhibit will be available for viewing all summer. Please stop by to reminisce or learn about the Foundation of Belize!

A Little Remembrance
A tiny little four page pamphlet from over one hundred years ago was found by Fr. Richard J. Pighini, CSV, in Bourbonnais, IL. He sent it to the Viatorian Archives to be preserved.
It is a remembrance of a mission that was given at St. George Church in Melvin, IL by the Rev. Peter F. Brown, CSV and the Rev. J.D. Kirley, CSV from Oct. 5 to Oct. 8, 1913.
In it are little prayers and advice on how to spend your day in a Christian manner and not get lost in sin - still applicable today. To view the entire pamphlet, click here. I hope you enjoy it!

Las Hermanas Exhibit
The latest exhibit at the Province Center celebrates the cooperative work of the Missionaries the Sacred Heart of Jesus and Our Lady of Guadalupe (MSCGpe) with the Clerics of St. Viator (CSV) since 1956.
On July 29, 1964, Pope Paul VI granted approval of the congregation founded by Sr. María Amada del Niῆo Jesús Sánchez Muῆoz (1895-1967) in Mexico City. This year, the Sisters are celebrating 50 years since they received Papal approval - so it was time to highlight their presence and good works.
Photographs are on display from the various places that they ministered over the years:

St. Viator College Newspapers 1937-38 online
The digitization project has been slow going and gears were switched part way through. You will find some of the very early years as well, called St. Viateur's College Journal, but a decision was made to work in reverse chronological order - from 1938 back to the beginning publications. The most recent materials will have more interest, especially to alum and their families who may be researching.

Follow the links to the issue you want to read. The newspapers are posted using Issuu - a digital publishing software. Familiarize yourself with the various functions for zooming, searching, page turning, etc. - it's pretty intuitive. Let me know if you have any questions or problems.

Alum donation
Today in the mail was a letter and donation of a photograph and postcard to the Viatorian Community Archives from an alum of St. Viator College in Bourbonnais that operated from 1868 - 1938. Mr. Bob Gerschke from Milwaukee was a freshman at the college in 1937-38 - the last year of its existence.
Mr. Gerschke currently receives the Viator newsletter which is distrbuted to our extended community of family, friends and alumni. He read the archives' articles requesting materials of 'all things Viatorian.' He decided these items would be better off preserved in the archives for future generations rather than risk being lost or destroyed if kept in his personal collection.
The college has been closed for 75 years now and it's amazing how items are still being found! Thanks, Bob, for your generous donation - now part of the Alumni Files in the St. Viator College Collection housed in the Viatorian Community Archives at the Province Center in Arlington Heights, IL.

Cheryl contacted the archives this past summer for information on the Viatorians who served at St. Joseph. As a result of that research, we received this beautiful history of the parish.
St. Joseph Church was established as a parish in Oct. 12, 1879, but many years before that visiting missionary priests were responsible for bringing the Catholic faith to Manteno.
The booklet covers the visiting missionary priests, the pastors and associate pastors, the deacons, the religious education directors and coordinators. Also included is the history of Our Lady Academy and the grotto of Our Lady, as well as, the Knights of Columbus. The last section of the booklet lists the men and women of the area who were called to a religious vocation.
Today the parish appears to still be vibrant and growing. In this century, they have a new religious education building with 12 classrooms, a newly renovated front entrance and elevator and a newly designed website. Check them out!
Congratulations to St. Joseph Parish in Manteno for their long history of faith and committment and blessings for many decades to come!

The Voice of the Viatorians
Do you listen to podcasts? The Voice of the Viatorians is now available for your listening pleasure. Podcasting just recently started here this summer with our intern, DJ Horstmann. It called 'The Road Ahead.' We are hoping to post new episodes weekly. Right now it's a mix of current Viatorian news stories, historical articles and interviews.Do you like history? Are you interested in the history of the Viatorians? Well, I'm pulling some published materials from the Community archives - especially from the St. Viator College Collection.
St. Viator College was located in Bourbonnais, IL from 1868-1938. It is now the campus of Olivet Nazarene University - you know - where the Bears hold their training camp each summer. Well, there are some very interesting articles in the college journal/newspaper. I hope you like them!

St. Viator Parish has much to celebrate!
A new exhibit has been hung at the Province Center in celebration of St. Viator Church in Chicago. The church is celebrating its 125th anniversary this year (1888 - 2013) and the school just celebrated its 110th anniversary (1902 - 2012).
A map was drawn up to show the original boundaries of the parish compared with the boundaries today. Pins on the map locate the various institutions - where they were established and moved - as well as the various churches in the Archdiocese that were established as the area quickly grew in population.
The display describes the history of the parish at the beginning on Belmont and Crawford with its early Viatorian pastors until its move to Addison St. then jumps to what's going on at the parish today under the pastorship of Fr. Charles Bolser, CSV. The parish has been under the leadership of the Viatorian Community since its establishment in 1888. So there is much to celebrate!
The exhibit will be on display from September through Novemeber. Stop by to read more of the historical details, see photos of the pastors and buildings and a few artifacts from the archives' collection.
